Water supply contaminated with antidepressants may cause autism

A report by the University of Idaho claims that antidepressants in drinking water can trigger the condition in people that have a genetic disposition to Autism Spectrum Disorders. As the UK government dithers over the clean up of the water supply contaminated by pharmaceuticals, the report suggests even small amounts of drugs in the water supply can have devastating effects. Caroline Hattersley, Head of Information, Advice and Advocacy at The National Autistic Society, said: "It's important that we expand research into the causes of autism. We know that environmental and genetic factors have some role to play, but our understanding is still very limited as it is such a complex disability."
